It’s a reasonable instinct, since several nutritional and hormonal factors are genuinely linked to hair loss. But lab numbers alone rarely tell the whole story, and interpreting them without context can be misleading. Here’s a general overview of what these markers are thought to have to do with hair health, and why the full picture matters more than any single number.
Markers commonly checked for hair loss
- Ferritin (iron stores). Low ferritin has been associated with increased hair shedding in some studies, particularly in people with telogen effluvium (a temporary, diffuse shedding pattern). The NIH’s research literature includes studies exploring this link, though “normal” reference ranges vary by lab, and what counts as optimal for hair health specifically is debated among clinicians.
- Vitamin D. Vitamin D receptors are present in hair follicles, and some research has looked at associations between low vitamin D and certain hair loss patterns, per overviews from sources like the National Institutes of Health. The relationship isn’t considered fully settled.
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Both an underactive and overactive thyroid can contribute to hair thinning, according to patient information from the American Thyroid Association and similar bodies, which is part of why TSH is often included in a hair loss workup.
- Sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol, progesterone). Hormonal fluctuations — including those related to the menstrual cycle, perimenopause, or conditions like PCOS — can influence hair growth cycles. Where in a cycle bloodwork is drawn can meaningfully affect these numbers, which is one reason single hormone readings are hard to interpret in isolation.
Why a single lab panel is hard to interpret alone
A few numbers on a lab report, without the context of symptoms, timing (like menstrual cycle phase), medical history, medications, and a physical exam, generally aren’t enough to pin down a cause. Reference ranges also differ between labs, and “within normal range” doesn’t always mean optimal for a specific concern like hair shedding. This is squarely the kind of interpretation that a doctor — often a primary care physician, endocrinologist, or dermatologist depending on the pattern of loss — is trained to do by weighing your labs against your full clinical picture, not something that can be reliably done from the numbers alone.
What’s usually a reasonable next step
If you’ve already had testing done, bringing the results to the clinician who ordered them (or a dermatologist) for interpretation is generally the most direct path, since they can factor in your specific history, symptom pattern, and timing. Hair loss has many possible contributing factors — nutritional, hormonal, genetic, autoimmune, and stress-related among them — and narrowing that down usually benefits from a clinical evaluation rather than self-interpretation of isolated lab values.
