The condition most likely at play is called telogen effluvium — a temporary, diffuse hair-shedding response that the body can trigger after a significant physical or physiological shock. A serious head injury or concussion — along with the physical trauma, pain, and stress response that come with it — fits the general pattern of the kind of systemic shock known to push hair follicles prematurely into their resting (telogen) phase.

Why the timing lines up the way it does

One detail that trips people up: telogen effluvium doesn’t usually show up immediately after the triggering event. Cleveland Clinic notes that shedding typically becomes noticeable two to three months after the stressor, which lines up closely with the “started speeding up a couple months after the injury” pattern that’s commonly described. That delay is a normal feature of how the hair growth cycle works, not a sign that something separate or new is going on.

Telogen effluvium vs. pattern hair loss (MPB) — and why the distinction matters

If you already have male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and are managing it with treatment, a telogen-effluvium episode on top of that can understandably feel like your existing hair loss has suddenly accelerated. In reality, these are two different (though sometimes overlapping) processes with different expected courses. The reassuring part, per Cleveland Clinic, is that telogen effluvium is typically temporary: shedding usually lasts three to six months and resolves largely on its own once the triggering event is behind you and the body’s stress response settles, with regrowth becoming noticeable afterward.

What’s worth doing next

If you’re a few months out from a concussion or other significant injury and seeing increased daily shedding, that’s a reasonable and common enough pattern to bring up with a dermatologist, ideally one who already knows your hair loss history and any medications you’re on. They can help distinguish ordinary post-injury telogen effluvium from a change in your underlying pattern hair loss, and can advise on timing and monitoring rather than reacting to either process in isolation.
